Class of 2020

Teams

The 1967 Canadian Junior Boys Championship was contested at the Toronto Golf Club. The first two days (August 21 and 22) featured the interprovincial team championship.

The Manitoba Team consisted of Steve Bannatyne of Rossmere Golf & Country Club, Manfred Braovac of Strathcona Golf Course in what is now Thunder Bay, Ontario, Dave Hill of Southwood Golf & Country Club and Kenneth Redfern of Breezy Bend Country Club. The non – playing captain was Dr. Dwight Parkinson.

Hill had won his third consecutive Manitoba Junior Boys Championship in 1967 with a 2 and 1 victory over Bannatyne. He was the first junior boy to win three Manitoba Junior Boys Championships.

Manitoba found itself 11 strokes behind British Columbia after the first day of competition with Hill having the low score on the team with a 75. In the competition, all four players’ scores counted each day. The second day was played in difficult conditions with wind and hard greens. Braovac had a 73 followed by Bannatyne with a 75, Hill with a 77 and Redfern with a 78. Manitoba’s two day total of 619 was enough for a 4 stroke victory over B.C. and a 13 stroke lead over third place Nova Scotia. This was the first time that a Manitoba Junior Boys Team had won the Canadian Inter – Provincial Team Championship.

Bannatyne made it to the semi – finals of the 1967 Canadian Junior Boys Championship losing to Doug Roxburgh 1 up. Bannatyne was also a member of the first Manitoba Men’s Team to win the Willingdon Cup Golf Championship in 1974. He was inducted into the Manitoba Golf Hall of Fame in 2012. David Hill played NCAA Division I golf at Dartmouth College where he was named All Ivy and All East as Dartmouth won the All Ivy and All East titles for the first time in school history. He qualified for the NCAA Championship in 1970. Braovac would go on to win the Manitoba Junior Boys Championship in 1968.

The 1967 Manitoba Junior Boys Golf Team was inducted into the Manitoba Order of the Buffalo Hunt, the province’s highest honour, for their achievement in winning the 1967 Canadian Junior Inter-Provincial Team Championship.
