Todd Kenneth Fanning dominated the Manitoba amateur golf scene in the 1980s and 1990s beforeturning to professional ranks.
Born in Saskatchewan, he spent his early years in Thunder Bay before moving in 1980 to Winnipeg where he started his golf career at the Winnipeg Canoe Club, then at Southwood Golf & Country Club from 1981 to 1993. He won the Manitoba junior men’s championship in 1984 and 1985 and played on provincial junior teams in 1984-85-86. He was runner-up in the Canadian juvenile championship in 1983 and 1984 before going on to win the Canadian junior titles in 1985 and 1986. The Manitoba junior team also won the Canadian team championship in 1985.
The first of Todd’s four Manitoba amateur championships also came while he was a junior in 1984 and he won the honours again in 1990-91-92. He played on Manitoba Willingdon Cup teams six times from 1984 through 1992. Two of these teams lost in playoffs and finished as runners-up for the national team honours, 1986 and 1991.
He also won the Manitoba men’s match play championship in 1992 and was selected Manitoba Golfer of the Year four times in 1984, 1985, 1986 and 1991 and was a finalist in 1992. He was selected Manitoba Male Athlete of the Year in 1985 and was a finalist in other years.
Fanning turned to professional ranks in 1993, earning his Canadian Tour card at the spring qualifying school. Playing out of Niakwa Country Club, his pro career featured a second-place finish in the CPGA championship in 1996 and he also place second in one Canadian Tour event in 1997 and two in 1998. In 2002, he earned conditional playing rights on the Buy.Com Tour and played in 17 events. He participated in four Canadian Open championships and one Air Canada championship.
He is an inductee into the Manitoba Golf hall of Fame and Museum Inc., September 25, 2006.
